On a more serious note, the last paragraph regarding acceptance into the WTO was interesting and very applicable to the course. The pie = Membership in the WTO Negotiation techniques to this point = compliance, apparently has not worked New negotiation technique = defiance. The idea is that if Russia can make trade more difficult in protest then those members of the WTO that are suffering will pressure the organization to fold. Will it work? I don't think so. It sounds to me like the domestic costs are going to be too high. The differences in Russian and U.S. politics is also apparent since the founder of one of Russia's largest poultry companies is also in the Upper house of the Russian Parliament and head of the agricultural committee. At least we are a little more subtle in our lobbying... does kind of look like a conflict of interest though.
