Here is a NYT article about Israeli plans to build a large amount of new housing in East Jerusalem. Note that this is Israel taking more pie than either the Palestinians or the Americans want them to. If this issue doesn't mean anything to you right now, it will in a couple of weeks.
Honestly, I don't get it. This has got to be one of the most frustrating conflicts to deal with. The move seems blatantly defiant.
ReplyDeleteI guess it makes sense to a statist. Why should Israel comply with anything if they feel that they can take the pie, piece by piece, and no one will stop them. The Palestinians and Arabs can throw up their arms in protest and hope that someone is listening and paying attention, but nothing seems to get done.
It definitely increases the Palestinian suspicions of private info and commitment problems. That is, if they can ever convince the sides to come together again. (I am sure they will, but I wonder about the effectiveness.) Israel has very little, if any reputation of keeping commitments. Until they fix that then the peace talks are going to be quite pointless.
